The mongongo tree stands scattered across the deep sands of the Kalahari, the dry country that reaches into South Africa's north. Its fallen fruit has been gathered there for thousands of years — the nuts eaten, and the kernels pressed for their oil. The San, the desert's first peoples, have long carried mongongo as both food and oil: rubbed into skin and hair against the sun, the wind, and the dry desert air.

What's inside: One ingredient: pure mongongo (manketti) seed oil — Schinziophyton rautanenii — pressed from the kernel inside the nut. It is naturally rich in linoleic and eleostearic acids, the fatty acids that let the oil dry down to a light film, and in vitamin E.

What it's for: The desert oil, used the desert way: worked into skin after sun and wind, and smoothed through hair to keep the dry air from taking its toll. A few drops carry a long way.

How to use: Warm a few drops between your palms. Press into a clean face, morning or night, or smooth over damp hair lengths and ends — no rinse, no weight.
