The same Atlas Mountain clay as our 4 oz jar — in the full 1 lb size, for the house that keeps the hammam ritual weekly.

Ghassoul clay — also called rhassoul — is dug from ancient mineral deposits in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco, the only place on earth this clay is mined. For centuries it has sat at the heart of the Moroccan hammam ritual: mixed to a paste, spread over face, body, and hair, left to sit in the steam of the bathhouse, and rinsed away. A 1 lb bag holds months of that ritual.

What's inside: Pure ghassoul (rhassoul) clay from Morocco — one ingredient, nothing added. It is naturally rich in minerals, among them silica, magnesium, potassium, and calcium, and it comes as a fine powder that mixes to a smooth, spreadable mud.

What it's for: The hammam tradition, stocked for the long run: face and body masks and the ritual wash worked through the hair, mixed fresh each time with water — or rose water, honey, or milk.

How to use: Mix a spoonful or two with water to a smooth paste. Spread it over face or body, let it dry, and rinse clean. Follow with a butter or oil while skin is still warm. Seal the container between uses and keep it dry.

Moroccan Mud, 1 lb — pure Moroccan ghassoul clay. Shades of mud vary — that is the nature of a clay dug from the earth, not made in a lab. Made in Morocco. Supplied by Africa Imports (SKU M-361).
